WXHC spoke with both candidates for NY’s 51st senatorial district


Republican Peter Oberacker has been an Otsego County legislator since 2015 and currently has the backing of the man leaving the job, James Seward.

Prior to his election to the County Board, Oberacker served as Maryland Town Supervisor and as a town board member.

He’s also the CEO of a research and development company.

Democrat James Barber is a fifth-generation farmer in the Schoharie Valley and has run for state senate multiple times over the past 30 years.

He served as Executive Director for the USDA Farm Service Agency from 2009-2017, appointed by former President Barack Obama.

Barber is also former State Director for the NY Farm Bureau.

The 51st Senatorial District includes all of Cortland, Schoharie and Otsego, along with parts of Tompkins, Herkimer, Chenango, Cayuga, Delaware, and Ulster Counties.

Just over two months remain before Election Day on Tuesday, November 3.
