Tomorrow is World Elder Abuse Day (June 15th) and the Cortland County Area Agency on Aging will be hosting an event where presentations by area law enforcement and local agencies will take place.

The presentations will take place at 10am on the front steps of the County Office Building at 60 Central Ave. with a rain location in the building’s auditorium.

According to the New York State Division of Consumer Protection, financial fraud and exploitation is considered the most prevalent form of elder abuse with recent figures showing the abuse cost victims nearly $36.5 billion.

“Older adults are a vital part of our families and communities, and unfortunately this beloved population is also often the target of scammers and abusers,” said Secretary of State Robert J. Rodriguez.

Elder abuse occurs when an adult over the age of 60 is abused, neglected or financially exploited by someone. Abuse includes physical, sexual, emotional/psychological abuse in addition to financial exploitation, abandonment and neglect.

Abuse can happen anywhere and at any time include their home, a family member’s home, nursing home, or assisted living community. Those who are seen as vulnerable and lonely are the most likely to experience abuse.

Residents are encouraged to attend tomorrow’s event at the County Office Building.
