Back on December 22nd, Cortland Police responded to 183 Main Street in the City of Cortland for a reported domestic incident. During the investigation, officers arrested the suspect, 37 year old Joseph R. Miller on charges of assault, criminal obstruction of breathing, and obstruction of governmental administration.

Cortland Police say the victim, a 61 year old woman, had sustained injuries of fractured ribs and lacerations from being assaulted by Miller during the incident. The 61-year old woman would die days later on January 6th, 2024.

An investigation determined her injuries from Miller played a “key role” in the cause of her death.

It was after her death, the case was then presented to the Cortland County Grand Jury, who then had Joseph Miller indicted on Manslaughter in the 1st and in the 2nd. He was also facing charges of Assault in the 2nd, Criminal Obstruction of Breathing, and Obstruction of Governmental Administration.

Miller was arrested on June 21st and sent to Cortland County Jail. Cortland Police say he will appear in court at a later date.
