Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act Looks to Expand Options in the Cafeteria
With passage through the House after its approval in the Senate last month, the next stop for the Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act is the President’s desk. If passed into law, it will overturn legislation established in 2012 that details what varieties of milk are allowed to be served with school meals.
Under the current rules, fat-free and 1% milk are the only options allowed to be served. The Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Acts would expand these options to include whole, 2%, and skim flavored or plain milk. It also gives the option to schools to serve organic or nonorganic milk.
The dairy industry is the largest single segment in New York State’s agricultural industry with nearly 3,000 dairy farms statewide.
