Weather Concerns Raise Prices at The Pump Despite Lower Demand

Gas prices will continue to rise nationally even though demand has been lower than expected from motorists. According to AAA, weather concerns of hurricane development in the Atlantic and increasing temperatures again in Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas may push oil prices even higher.

The national average currently stands at $3.87 a gallon. For New York State, the average is $3.92 a gallon, but is now expected to increase if refineries in the states mentioned above have to cut production due to the heat.

“While fewer drivers are fueling up at the moment, the looming heat and entering the heart of hurricane season are a roadblock to falling gas prices. Gas prices may keep waffling until mid-September or longer.” Stated AAA in a release.

Cortland County’s average for a gallon of gas is slightly higher than the state average, at $3.96 a gallon of gas. Neighboring Tompkins and Onondaga Counties averages stand at $3.92 and $3.91 respectively.
