Watch Out for Those Deer! AAA Data Finds Deer Crashes Peak in Fall

The organization AAA has analyzed car crash data in New York State and determined that October, November, and December are the peak months for wrecks involving animals such as deer.

In 2021 there were over 34,000 animal-related crashes statewide. That’s up slightly from 2020 and is equivalent to an accident every 16 minutes. Of those incidents, over 1500 caused injuries while five proved fatal. With crashes being most common near sunset, motorists should be especially vigilant when driving after dark.

In addition, to cut down on deer crashes AAA advises scanning the road, following the speed limit, and applying your brakes firmly and remaining in your lane if a collision can’t be avoided.
