Volunteers are needed to help older adults with technology in Cortland County by the Finger Lakes Geriatric Education Center at Ithaca College’s Gerontology Institute.
The program is created to help older adults learn and be able to connect through technology. During the program, older adults are given a free tablet and matches them to a volunteer to help them set up their device.
Once the device is set up, they will also learn basic technology terms, and how to use the device. The overall goal of the program is to assist older adults build the skills needed to use technology to stay connected with family, friends and the community.
With ever changing technology, it can create a digital divide for those who may lack the basic skills to navigate social networks, access healthcare information and/or community resources available
Those who volunteer would be considered to the older adult their “Digital Coach” and meet with them one on one with prepared lessons created. Training for those looking to volunteer to help older adults begins in April, with the kickoff to the event starting in May.
