Calling all volunteers, Truxton Academy is seeking help as they move to the next phase in their High Tunnel Build. Volunteers are being sought for both this Saturday from 2 to 5pm and Sunday 10 to 4pm.

Truxton Academy is also asking community members to lend or bring the following items: a 10 foot ladder, cordless screw/impact W/5/16” Tek Driver, adjustable wrench, vice grips, and socket wrench.

The High Tunnel Build is a joint venture between Truxton Academy and the Truxton Community Center, Jamie Smart, Rural Life Lab Coordinator at Truxton Academy told X101 News.

“The high tunnel has been in the works for a few years, and we’ve purchased it using 2023 grant funds of just under $10,000 from the Natural Resource Conservation Service of the USDA.” Smart continued regarding the work for the project to come to fruition.

The High Tunnel will be able to better serve the Charter School’s students in the cafeteria.

“Our outdoor garden is most productive in the summer when kids aren’t at school, so this will allow us to extend the growing season better into the months we need it.” Jamie Smart said in regards to year round food growing for the school.

It will also serve as an important educational piece for the school as well. Helping students have interactive and experiential learning with plant growth throughout the year.

This weekend’s volunteer work will look to complete the skeleton of the high tunnel. The size of it being 30’X48’. The plastic covering will take place at a later time when the entire school can be involved, Smart said.

Funding for the project came from a grant from the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) based on the size of the tunnel. The allocated grant money was, in total, $9,129.60. One of the requirements for the grant funding is for the location to be in a crop or garden production area. The Truxton Academy has had a large garden for a number of years, the new tunnel will take up about half the garden area to allow for year round planting.

If you’re interested in volunteering for this weekend’s work, Truxton Academy asks you to RSVP to Jamie Smart via email at Jamie.Smart@TruxtonAcademy.org.
