On Monday, November 13th, the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office received a report of sex abuse allegations that had taken place between January 2022 and November 2023 at an undisclosed location within the Town of Virgil.
During the investigation, it was determined the suspect, 37 year old Joseph P. Cunningham of Virgil, had subjected a victim to inappropriate sexual contact on multiple occasions during the period. The Sheriff’s Office says the victim knew Cunningham.
Officers arrested and charged Cunningham on Monday. He faces charges of Criminal Sex Act in the 1st, Sex Abuse in the 1st, both Felonies, and Sexual Misconduct, a Misdemeanor. Cunningham was arraigned and later released to alternatives to incarceration.
