Virgil firefighter wins inaugural Stephen Zelsnack Jr. Scholarship

Local News

Virgil FD member Kristi Walley is the inaugural recipient of the Stephen Zelsnack Jr. Scholarship, started last year in memory of the former career city of Cortland firefighter who lost his life tragically in 2018.

A ceremony was hosted yesterday by the Cortland Professional Firefighters Association.

Members of Zelsnack’s family were present to help deliver Walley her special award, including his wife and kids.

Stephen’s brother, Jim, currently serves as a captain at the city fire department, where his nephew, Jordan, also began last October.

Applicants for the annual Stephen Zelsnack Jr. Scholarship submitted a personal essay detailing their connection to the fire service, emergency medicine, or agriculture.

Resumes and letters of recommendation were then used to rank candidates based on community service, fire department participation and leadership organizations like FFA.
