Area crews responded to an open brush fire yesterday afternoon in Virgil.
Responding first just after 12:30 pm were members of Virgil Fire Department, who immediately requested Dryden and McLean to bring a brush truck each to the scene.
Virgil Fire Chief Adam Brown said the fire spanned approximately 900 square feet, blowing in all directions at times towards an occupied home and a nearby wooded area.
DEC officials were also requested to the scene due to the state’s active open burn ban.
“Thank you to the quick action of all our members and those from Dryden, McLean and the Coordinators office,” Virgil Chief Adam Brown said in a Facebook post. “I would like to reiterate that a burn ban is in effect and despite a comment I heard made today brush fires are ‘just brush fires,’ they do burn down homes and do kill and injure people. Please thank a volunteer and understand what they are doing is essential it is more than a hobby or something fun to do.”
