Village & Town of Homer & Town of Cortlandville Designate Syracuse Based Post Standard as Official Newspaper

Yesterday, Wednesday March 19th, three more municipalities designated the Syracuse based Post Standard as their municipalities official newspaper for legal notices. The Village of Homer voted unanimously during a special meeting without questions or discussions as well as the Town of Homer during their respective meetings.

In the Town of Cortlandville, prior to their vote on designating the Post Standard as their official newspaper, Board member David Donlick raised concerns of having a Syracuse-based paper for legal notices that only has a print paper 3 days a week.

“I think it’s gonna be kinda hard for people to grab the Post Standard that’s delivered only three times a week to the average household to get legal notices on stuff that happens in the town.” Donlick said to the Board. “I’m in agreement that [the town] needs to appoint a newspaper. I think we need to look at digital forms that are going to get the information out to the consumer, the taxpayer.”

He continued on the town could use social media through the town’s accounts as a way to approach residents or third-party companies that can notify people directly.

Cortlandville Town Clerk Kirstin Rocco-Petrella added to Mr. Donlick’s comments that the Post Standard does print 3-days a week, but the paper also publishes online via Syracuse.com, it’s sister company. She continued the town does notify other local news media outlets, including X101, as well as to the town website and following the requirements needed for notices. It should be noted, the Village of Homer will also notify X101 News of upcoming meetings/special meetings.

The Town of Cortlandville Board voted unanimously to designate the Post Standard as the official newspaper for the Town for the remainder of the year.

New York State law currently requires legal notices to be printed in a newspaper. Legal notices include LLCs, LPs, LLPs, and PLLCs be published at least six weeks after formation, or within 120 days. There is currently legislation proposed to allow legal notices to be published via online news outlets; this legislation has yet to become law as of March 2025.

*Note: This story has added information regarding the Town of Homer also naming the Post Standard as the towns official newspaper.
