Village suspends tax penalties until at least June 30

Local News

UPDATE – Posted March 31

In an effort to help residents struggling from the COVID-19 pandemic and resulting statewide shutdowns, the Village of Homer Board of Trustees voted last night to waive interest and penalties for certain village taxes until at least June 30.

A special board session was held virtually via Zoom Meetings to consider the proposal, which was first raised at last week’s regular board meeting on Tuesday night.

The measure passed unanimously last night, with a provision that village leaders will reevaluate the waivers after June 30 to determine whether or not they’re still needed.

WXHC will be speaking with Village Mayor Hal McCabe today for more information on this topic.

Be sure to stay tuned for that interview.

The Village of Homer Board of Trustees will hold a virtual public hearing this evening on a proposed measure to suspend interest and penalties for residents on their property taxes until July.

Residents can participate in the special board session at 5 pm by either calling in or using Zoom meetings (see bottom of page).

Village leaders put forward the proposal at last week’s board meeting on Tuesday, in an attempt to accommodate some of the financial hardships likely being faced by those unable to work due to the ongoing health emergency.

The board also approved several reductions in spending from their previously enacted 2020-21 budget, which took effect March 1.

Those precautions are in anticipation of an estimated $75k hit to sales tax revenue for the year as a result of the pandemic.
