Village of Homer Residents Can Now Sign up For No Mow May

During last night’s Homer Board of Trustees, the board voted unanimously to approve once again allowing homeowners within the village to participate in No Mow May. All residents who are interested in participating must register their property no later than May 6th at the Village Offices at 31 North Main Street in Homer.

During No Mow May, the Village Code Office will not issue citations for overgrown lawns. Homer Mayor Pat Clune did say residents can still participate in saving the bees by instead planting flowers if they do not wish to leave their lawns unmowed for a month.

According to BeeCityUSA.org, lawns provide little benefit to wildlife due to them being constantly mowed, raked, fertilized, weeded, chemically treated, and watered. During the early Spring season, flowers may be hard to find for newly emerged native bees and letting your lawn grow longer and letting flowers bloom within can provide nectar and pollen to help bees thrive.

BeeCity also added you do not need to go a full month without mowing. Reducing your lawn mowing to two to every three weeks can increase flower blooms too.
