Village of Homer Passes 2026-2027 Budget – Approves Contract Extension With Syracuse Haulers

The Village of Homer Board of Trustees unanimously passed their 2026-2027 budget following a public hearing at the Homer Town Hall last evening; no one spoke during the public hearing. The budget for the fiscal year 2026/2027 is $3.9 million dollars, a 1.82% decrease from the previous budget.

Village residents will see an 8% increase in their property taxes. This equates to a $189.83 increase for homes assessed at $250,000, a $113.59 increase for homes assessed at $150,000, and a $75.73 increase for homes assessed at $100,000.

The Village of Homer had to work through multiple financial challenges for their 2026/2027 budget including a loss in sales tax revenues ($110,000), the Town of Cortlandville themselves working to reduce their budget by cutting $36,000 for the Homer Recreation Department, and overall increases in village expenses around $376,300. Those increased costs included insurance rates, tipping fees, state retirement, and more.

Additionally during their meeting, the board unanimously voted to a 1-year contract extension with Syracuse Haulers for trash and recycling services in the amount of $204,724.56, a 7% increase. The extension will run from March 1 through February 28, 2027. The village will also be responsible for all tipping fees at the Cortland County Landfill.

Homer Mayor Clune noted he would like to send out a bid for trash and recycling services next year to find a lower rate.
