The victim involved in last week’s fatal farming accident in Freetown has been identified as 41-year-old Reuben Coplentz, of McGraw Marathon Road.
Officials with the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office said he was pulling heavy equipment up a slight incline on his farm with an older style “Oliver”-brand tractor, when it suddenly overturned and pinned him to the ground just before 5:30 p.m. on Thursday (November 7),
Further investigation determined the tractor was not equipped with a protective roll bar, which helps to prevent a flip-over.
Other family members present at the farm were eventually able to free Coplentz from underneath the machine with the use of a jack.
He was then treated at the scene for severe internal injuries by Marathon Fire and Rescue, before being brought to a nearby hospital, where he passed away as a result of those injuries.
