The Red Cross is organizing a Salute to Military Families for Saturday morning at the American Legion Post 489 at 212 Tompkins Street in Cortland.
Veterans and their families are invited.
Retired Navy Rear Admiral David Duryea, now VP for Finance and Management at SUNY Cortland, will be the featured speaker.
He says one of the goals of the brunch is to network, and share resources available here for veterans, reservists, and their families.
“I think that what you’ll find is with the veterans, there are things that being a veteran you can relate to other veterans maybe in some ways that with other folks,” said Duryea.
Duryea moved to the Cortland area about a year ago and says although he lived in a lot of places in the Navy, he’s impressed by the patriotism here.
“It’s just a great place to live and I really applaud the people for their patriotism and their outreach to our veterans.”
Families are welcome at the brunch event Saturday morning even if the family veteran is away.
Organizers hope the event is a chance for families to learn about support and services from the Red Cross and others that are available locally.
Local VFW and Legion posts will also answer questions about membership for anyone interested.
The brunch is free, and is scheduled from 9:30 am until noon Saturday, April 30.
Anyone interested in the event can RSVP at (607) 753-1182 or by emailing Thomas Margrave at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The event is part of the Red Cross Centennial Celebration for the local chapter in Cortland.
