The Edge of Collapse

In December 1777, George Washington’s Continental Army marched into a winter encampment at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, on the absolute edge of total collapse.

The troops were completely starving, lacking basic shoes, uniforms, and blankets. Brutal outbreaks of typhus, smallpox, and dysentery ravaged the makeshift log huts, killing over two thousand soldiers. They weren’t a professional, seasoned military force; they were a ragtag collection of farmers, blacksmiths, and young immigrants who were rapidly losing hope of ever defeating the mighty British empire.

But out of that frozen, agonizing misery came the ultimate turning point of the entire Revolutionary War.

The Prussian Drillmaster

In February 1778, he arrived at the frozen camp of Valley Forge: Baron Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben, a former Prussian military officer.

He had volunteered his services to George Washington, but there was a massive logistical problem: Von Steuben spoke absolutely zero English. To communicate his complex military ideas, he had to write his commands down in French, have an American officer translate them into English, and then yell them at the troops.

When the language barrier caused chaos, Von Steuben would famously break out into a storm of colorful German and French curses, entertaining the troops while whipping them into shape.

The Order and Discipline Manual

How do you train thousands of uneducated, disorganized soldiers when you don’t even speak their language?

Baron von Steuben used a brilliant, highly efficient method. He hand-selected a “model company” of one hundred top soldiers and personally trained them with intense, microscopic detail. Once these one hundred men mastered the proper way to march, reload weapons, use bayonets, and organize camp sanitation, he sent them back out into the camp to each train one hundred more.

He even wrote a definitive training manual, the Regulations for the Order and Discipline of the Troops of the United States, which remained the official guide for the US Army for decades. Innovation under immense pressure—that is the American way.

The Professional Fighting Machine

By June 1778, the transformation of the Continental Army was absolute.

The broken, sickly militia that had crawled into Valley Forge six months prior marched out as a highly disciplined, unified, professional fighting machine. At the subsequent Battle of Monmouth, they went toe-to-toe with the elite British army and forced them to retreat, proving to the world that American grit, when paired with proper training, could overcome any obstacle.

Tomorrow, we reveal the thrilling story of the midnight heist that saved the Declaration of Independence from burning during the War of 1812.
