United Way For Cortland County Presents Check of $2,350 to Food Bank of Central New York
Last week, United Way for Cortland County (UWCC) President and CEO, Kristina Thelan, and Community Relations & Marketing Manager Tim Haskell, presented a check in the amount of $2,350 to the Food Bank of Central New York.
The money donated to the food bank was raised through the UWCC Cortland Food Pantry Fundraiser between November and February of this year. The UWCC credits the generosity of the Cortland community, who they say, responded to an increase of food instability due to a disruption of SNAP benefits late last year. With this, the UWCC says 15 local food pantries will receive support to keep their shelves stocked. According to the UWCC, the money raised will be distributed proportionally to individuals served and placed directly into the food banks spending accounts, who have an increased buying power to extend every dollar provided.
“Food pantries continue to see high levels of need in the first quarter of 2026, and any changes to SNAP benefits will only increase reliance on emergency food programs,” Karen Belcher, President and CEO of the Food Bank of CNY said. “Funds raised through efforts like the Cortland Food Pantry Fundraiser help ensure that pantries can continue to respond quickly, with dignity and compassion when neighbors need help the most.”
The UWCC also warns many neighbors will face ongoing challenges, mainly in part with changes in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) come March 1. According to the United Way, updates will include eligibility requirements and exemptions, which is expected to reduce benefits for certain households.
“The UWCC extends sincere thanks to all donors who contributed to the Cortland Food Pantry Fundraiser. Their generosity will have a direct, local impact—helping food pantries keep shelves stocked and doors open for those in need.”
