Unemployment Rate Hits 4% in Cortland County 

The New York State Department of Labor has released their latest preliminary numbers for local area unemployment for the month of May. Overall, state unemployment remained the same as last month at 4.2%.

In Cortland County, unemployment increased by .6% to 4% for the month of May. In May of 2023, the unemployment rate in the county was 3.4%. The Department of Labor reported Cortland County’s number of those employed remained the same as last year, at 21,500. However, the number of unemployed had increased from 800 in May of 2023, to now 900 for May ‘24.

Cortland County now has the highest unemployment rate in the Central New York Regions. Neighboring Tompkins County had a 3.5% unemployment rate, Onondaga at 3.7%, Chenango at 3.2%, and Madison County at 3.7%.
