Two-Way Main Street Delayed Until Spring in City of Cortland – Work on Groton Ave. Ahead of Schedule
The start of the two-way Main Street in Downtown Cortland has been delayed until Spring 2025, Cortland Mayor Scott Steve announced in a release by the city. The delay of implementation of the two-way Main Street was cited due to the approaching winter season and design and engineering issues. The delay will also delay the final course of paving on Main Street.
“The community has endured the disruption for nearly three years. Unfortunately we are running out of time this season to ensure the final finishes meet our expectations,” Mayor Steve said.
Construction crews will continue to work on installing new sidewalks and decorative pavers along Main Street though with landscaping and planting also to begin in the coming weeks.
Main Street will see temporary striping added to maintain one-way traffic and existing pull-in parking until work resumes in the spring.
“Cortland will be celebrating its 125th anniversary as a City in 2025 and it makes sense to officially unveil our new Main Street and reinvigorated downtown as part of that celebration.” Steve continued.
The idea to rebuild Main Street began back in 2017 when the City of Cortland was awarded $10 Million Dollars in the state’s Downtown Revitalization Initiative. Design for the reconstruction started in 2019 with construction beginning in 2023. Work included new storm sewers, water lines, upgrades to the sanitary sewer system and the installation of fiber optic access.
For Groton Ave, the City of Cortland reports that work is ahead of schedule with construction crews beginning base paving for the remainder of the street from Homer Ave. to Main Street on Wednesday.
