A two-trailer accident early this morning (August 20) closed both lanes of Interstate-81 Northbound for three hours, just north of exit 9 near milepost marker 42 in the Town of Marathon.
Investigators with the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office say one of the drivers, 25-year-old Sean Nicholl of Freehold, NJ, went off the roadway just before 4 a.m. and struck several trees before overturning and blocking both lanes of traffic.
A second oncoming trailer driver, identified as Daniel Bloom Jr. of Clearfield, PA, was unable to avoid the wrecked trailer and collided with it.
Thankfully, there were no reported injuries.
Both lanes were closed for more than three hours on the section of the highway between exit 8 in Whitney Point and exit 10 in Cortlandville.
The left lane was reopened around 6:15 a.m. and the right lane just before 1:15 p.m.
Assisting at the scene were members of the Marathon Fire Department, Ron’s Towing & Auto Body, the New York State Department of Transportation, and the New York State Police CVE unit (Commercial Vehicle Enforcement).
The investigation is ongoing at this time.
