Two Students Suspended After Bringing BB Gun to Cortland High School on Halloween
Cortland Enlarged City School District Bob Edwards in an email to parents says two students have been suspended following an incident at the Cortland Jr. Sr. Highschool Friday morning. Edwards says during the morning of Friday, October 31st, a student was found to be in possession of a BB gun inside the building.
The student was believed to be given the BB gun by another student, who originally brought it onto the school grounds. Edwards says the students told officials the BB gun was a prop for a student’s Halloween costume.
“Both students are no longer on premises nor allowed to be. Both students have been suspended and are pending a Superintendent’s Hearing. As a District we are now required to follow the steps articulated in our Code of Conduct.” Edwards says.
All students and staff at the school are safe, Edwards added. The incident was witnessed by “very few students” with staff being discreet. Edwards says once the school gained knowledge of the weapon in the building, Officer Slater addressed the student, who surrendered the item without hesitation.
“I am thankful for our Jr. Sr. High School administrative team and Officer Slater for their handling of a very serious violation of our school Code of Conduct.”
Edwards says the school will continue their investigation on the incident and follow their Code of Conduct process. X101 News has reached out to Cortland Schools for additional comment.
