On Friday, March 18, 2022, two new firefighters were sworn in at the Cortland Fire Department.

The small ceremony at Cortland Fire Headquarters was led by Chief of Department Wayne Friedman with Mayor Scott Steve performing the oath of office.

Both Douglas Medler and Patrick Dahuluch were sworn in by the mayor in front of friends, family, and other fire department members.

Both new Firefighters have begun their basic training at the City of Auburn Recruit Firefighter Training Program. This program is 9 weeks long encompassing physical training, academic education and firefighter skill training.

Also at the ceremony, Firefighter Roy Everett was promoted to the rank of Captain. Everett is a 10-year veteran and will continue in his function in the Code Office, and assuming the responsibilities as the Assistant Code Director. Both new firefighters when completed with their basic training will then be assigned to the code office as well.

“The collective vision of the City, Union and Fire Department has allowed these positions to be filled with the goal of providing improved code enforcement and also allowing for the dual role as firefighters when emergencies arise”, stated Chief Friedman.

Additional daytime fire staffing is critical to overall operations as this is typically when volunteer staff are working and unavailable.

“We are excited about these personnel changes within the department and look forward to each of them having a long, healthy, and successful career”. Continued Friedman
