Two Arrested by Sheriff on Animal Cruelty Charges

The Cortland County Sheriff’s Office has arrested two individuals after a joint investigation conducted by the Sheriff’s Office and the Cortland County SPCA’s law enforcement department, with additional assistance from the public.

Officer’s arrested 37 year old James R. Williams and 26 year old Paige L. Hewitt, both from Cortlandville from an arrest warrant obtained by the Cortland County SPCA’s law enforcement department.

Officers began their initial investigation in December 2022 when complaints were given about Williams and Hewitt not being at their residence in the Town of Cortlandville to care for 1 adult dog and 5 puppies.

Both Williams and Hewitt were charged with 6 counts each, in relation to the conditions of the adult dog and 5 puppies they had been kept in. Both were charged with 6 counts of Failure to Provide Proper Food and Drink to an Impounded Animal, a Misdemeanor.

All six animals are now being properly cared for by different owners & and the animals were not present at the time of the arrest of Williams and Hewitt.

Williams and Hewitt were released on their own recognizance and are due back in Cortlandville Town Court at a later date.
