Officers with the Transportation Security Agency (TSA) stopped 13 handguns at checkpoints in Upstate New York airports last year, one less than the 14 they confiscated in 2018.
The total included five guns at the Syracuse Airport and one in Ithaca.
Nationwide, more firearms were picked up last year than ever before in the 18-year history of the TSA, with a total of more than 4,400 discovered, averaging out to about 12.1 per day.
Eighty-seven percent of these firearms were loaded at the time of their discovery.
Travelers found with firearms at any airport checkpoint are subject to criminal charges from law enforcement and civil penalties from TSA of up to $13,000, even if a traveler has a concealed weapon permit.
A typical first offense for carrying a handgun into a checkpoint is $4,100.
Firearms are not permitted to be carried onto an airplane, but with proper permits can travel legally in checked bags if they are unloaded, packed in a hard-side case, locked, and packed separately from ammunition.
Ammunition must be in its original box and can be packed inside the hard-side case, next to the firearm.
Even if the box of ammunition is not full, the bullets must be in their original case, which should then be brought to the airline check-in counter, along with notification to an airline representative that the passenger wants to travel with the gun.
Firearms are transported inside checked baggage and fly underneath the aircraft.
