On Tuesday, May 9th, the City of Cortland Police Department responded to NBT Bank at 65 Main Street in the City of Cortland of a complaint of a person in the drive-thru attempting to cash a fake check for over $900.
The bank teller at NBT Bank was able to spot the fake check and a fake identification the person was attempting to use. When the teller verified the check to be fake, the person left the bank without any money.
Cortland Police found the person attempting to use the fake check just a short distance away. He was identified as Matthew S. Clark of Truxton NY. The check Clark was attempting to use belonged to a local business and was not issued to Clark.
Continued investigation found that several other checks were missing from the business where Clark was employed at the time. The other checks from the theft were cashed in other locations outside the City of Cortland and those investigations are ongoing CPD states.
Clark was arrested by Cortland Police and was found to be in possession of a small amount of drugs, the type of drug was not released.
He was charged with Possession of a Forged Instrument in the 2nd, Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the 4th, Identity Theft in the 2nd, all Felonies, Criminal Possession Stolen Property in the 5th, and Criminal Possession of a controlled substance, both Misdemeanors.
Clark was arraigned in Cortland City Court and then released to the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office, who had an unrelated warrant out for his arrest.
