Tompkins County and the surrounding community mourn the loss of 24-year-old Trumansburg native and Army Sgt. James Johnston, who was killed on Tuesday (June 25) while on duty in Afghanistan.
According to the Department of Defense, Sgt. Johnston died as the result of injuries sustained in a “fierce firefight” in Uruzgan Province during a combat operation.
Sgt. James G. Johnston was assigned to the 79th Ordnance Battalion (Explosive Ordnance Disposal), a part of the 71st Ordnance Group at Fort Hood, Texas. He was one of two Soldiers who died of wounds sustained from small arms fire during combat operations.
Flags will fly at half-staff starting today on all state government and Tompkins county government buildings.
