Troopers responded just past 7 pm to State Route 96B, where witnesses reported seeing an SUV being driven by 68-year-old Gary Hunter, of Ithaca, traveling southbound when it crossed over the center line, left the roadway and hit a tree.

Upon stopping to check on Hunter, witnesses say he was awake at first, but soon lost consciousness and had to be given emergency treatment at the scene.

When the trooper arrived, Hunter was receiving care from Bangs emergency personnel and was then transported to Cayuga Medical Center where he was later pronounced deceased.

Candor and Danby Fire Departments assisted state police at the scene.

The accident remains under investigation.
