The trial of a Cortland County man accused of stealing toolboxes from the Cortlandville K-Mart and beating a store employee who tried to stop him continues today.
Last October, Cortland County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the store on Route 13 for a reported robbery.
Police say Chad Cain was in the process of stealing four toolbox sets from the store when he was approached by a store manager. Cain is accused of hitting the manager with the toolboxes before fleeing the store.
The store manager sustained head injuries in the assault. Cain was located short time later.
Cain was originally charged with criminal contempt, assault, robbery, criminal possession of a weapon, and petit larceny.
A county grand jury indicted him on felony counts of first and second-degree robbery along with a misdemeanor charge of petit larceny.
County Prosecutor Bob DeMarco wrapped up his case yesterday. Cain’s defense lawyer Randolph Krumen will have the opportunity to present his case today.
