Tractor Trailer Driver Ticketed After Crash on I81 in Lafayette

State Police tell X101 News one person has been ticketed after a crash on I81 North in the Town of Layfette Friday morning, February 21st. Troopers responded to I81 North for a reported personal injury accident just before 5:30 in the morning. I81 North was briefly shutdown at Exit 67 (Old Exit 14) in Tully as a result of the crash.

A preliminary investigation by State Police found a 2001 Volvo tractor trailer being driven by 53 year old Sergio Munoz Mena of Pennsylvania, was traveling too fast in poor road conditions due to heavy snowfall. State Police say Mena ended up sideswiping a 2015 Freightliner driven by 32 year old Daron R. Nance, also from Pennsylvania.

As a result of the sideswipe, both trucks went off the road, crashed through a guardrail, and ended up over an embankment. Both drivers were transported to Upstate Hospital for minor injuries.

Mena was issued a ticket for speed not reasonable and prudent, and moved from lane unsafely. I81 reopened around 11 in the morning.
