Toys for Toys Donations Due Friday, December 5

Lily Byrne, X101 News:

There has been a higher number of applications for Toys for Tots in Cortland than ever before. As the donation season comes to a close, the non-profit is still in need of gifts, said Toys for Tots Coordinator Jessica Forbes.

“We have a very generous community, and they always go above and beyond for the kids,”

Forbes said.

Applications closed on Sunday, with 1065 children receiving toys, out of 445 applications.

“I have seen an uptick in requests compared to last year,” Forbes said. “I think it’s a combination of several things; lack of resources, high prices, failing economy. While Cortland County does a great job providing several different resources for people in need, there is only so much each one can offer. We have a deep well of people in need, and in comparison to that need, a shallow well of resources.”

Toys for Tots is seeking new and unwrapped gifts, particularly items for 12-14 year old’s. Forbes suggests blankets, books, games, bikes and bike helmets.

“Those are items we never seem to have enough of,” she said. “Homer Legion donates bikes to us every year, and we go through them very quickly.”

“You never know when the shoe is going to be on the other foot, and you may need to rely on resources to help you,” Forbes said.
