Tornado Touches Down in Broome County During Last Week Storm

The National Weather Service in Binghamton (NWS) says an EF-1 tornado touched down in Broome County early wednesday evening on February 28th. The NWS says the tornado was in the vicinity of Castle Creek and had an estimated wind speed of 100 mph.


The tornado was tracked on the ground for .61 of a mile and had a width of 150 yards. Damage the NWS says from the tornado included 2 large hay wagons lofted and strewn in pieces down the field, numerous large trees uprooted and snapped, damage to a barn with barn fragments impaled to the ground.

This tornado is only the second tornado in recorded history with the NWS to touch down in the month of February. The first occurred near Allegany New York back on February 24th 1975.

No injuries were reported.
