Tornado in Cortland County Confirmed By National Weather Service

The National Weather Service in Binghamton has confirmed an EF1 Tornado with peak winds of 90 mph hit Cortland County Monday evening.


Reports by the NWS show the tornado traveled 11.03 miles and had a max width of 200 yards. The tornado formed near the intersection of Route 38 and Purvis Road in Tompkins County before it moved northeastward through wooded areas in Harford to Virgil.

A majority of the damage was found to be on Clute Road where multiple trees were uprooted and snapped and a roof to a barn was partially torn off and collapsed. The tornado continued on to West River Road with damage to more trees occurring before the tornado lifted near the Tioughnioga River.

No injuries were reported.
