Tompkins Sheriff Responds to Cayuga Medical Center for Report of Man with Gun in Emergency Department

On September 13th around 7:30pm the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Department received a report of a male armed with a gun in the Emergency Department waiting room at Cayuga Medical Center at 101 Harris B. Dates Drive in Ithaca.



According to security video footage from the Cayuga Medical Center, when the the defendant in question entered the facility a firearm dropped from his pocket onto the floor of the Emergency entrance vestibule. Continuing into the facility, they left the weapon behind. The Emergency Department team alerted Security and law enforcement, who were already onsite.

The person was isolated and patients were removed from the waiting area. The firearm was secured without incident.

The suspect, 40 year old Java Abdur-Razzaaq of Ithaca, was arrested without incident and charged with two counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree, a felony. Deputies noted: one of the counts charged was due to the serial number on the gun being defaced, and the second count due to Abdur-Razzaaq being a convicted felon.

He was taken to Tompkins County Jail for arraignment and eventually released.
