The Tompkins County Health Department has issued a rabid bat warning.
The County Health Department reports two confirmed rabid bats have been found in Tompkins County this year. The Health Department is urging residents to capture any bat found in their home that may have come in contact with people or pets.
Rabies can be transmitted through bites from rabid animals. Bats present an additional concern because in certain situations a bite may go unnoticed.
If there is a chance that you or a pet have had contact with a bat you are advised to capture the bat without touching it so that it can be tested for rabies.
