Yesterday, October 13th Tompkins County Sheriff Osborne debuted the Sheriff’s Office all new and all electric vehicle at the Sheriff’s Showdown 2 event at Watkins Glen International.

The electric vehicle, a Ford Mustang Mach-E is the newest addition to the fleet of vehicles at the sheriff’s department. The addition of the electric vehicle is in part of the county and office’s move towards a greener fleet. The initiative began some years ago when the department added six hybrid vehicles.

Funding for the vehicle came from the County’s Green Fleet Capital fund, which was designated to help pilot new electric vehicles for county departments. They received $7,500 dollars from New York State as part of their Municipal Zero Emissions Vehicle Rebate Program.

The vehicle will only be used by the Airport Division and not for general patrol. Currently, the department states they average about 198 miles between charges. Cost savings will come from maintenance due to no need for oil changes and combustion engine components.

The new Mach-E vehicle will be assigned to the Airport Division of the Sheriff’s Department as the airport plans to install fast charging stations.
