Tompkins County resident scammed out of $20k

Local News

The Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a recent fraud complaint by a resident who was conned out of $20k by someone claiming to be with the department.

According to authorities, the victim got a call yesterday from a number that appeared to be from the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office – that’s a strategy known as “ghosting” or “spoofing,” where culprits make the number they’re calling from appear to be from somewhere else.

In this case, the resident was convinced to send $20k cash to Chicago in order to settle a supposed arrest warrant that didn’t actually exist.

Local authorities are now actively investigating the incident and remind the public they’ll never ask for any type of payment in this fashion.
