Tompkins County Legislature Asks State to Pay For Early Voting Costs

Local News

Tompkins County lawmakers say they support Governor Cuomo’s early voting initiative, if the state kicks in money to pay for it.

Tompkins County legislators voted this week to ask New York state pay the additional costs of operating polls before Election Day.

The Tompkins County Board of Elections says early voting would cost $16,000 to$32,000 per polling site.

The governor’s proposal would mandate counties to provide early voting sites for up to 12 days before special, primary and general elections. It’s estimated to cost counties $3 to $4 million statewide.

If approved early voting would not begin until 2017, and would not apply for village or school district elections. New York would become the 38th State to allow early voting.
