Today Marks 200 Years of the Cortland United Presbyterian Church
Today is the 200th Bicentennial anniversary of the Cortland United Presbyterian Church. The church started in 1825 with its first building built in 1827 at a cost of $3,000, equivalent to $50,000 today. The church would continue to grow and a new building, which stands today, was built in 1890. A Queen Anne style addition would later be constructed in 1903.
Over the past 200 years, the church has seen over 5,000 members, says current Pastor David Johnson.
Two celebrations are planned to recognize the occasion. A banquet to be held this Friday, April 23rd will honor long time members of the congregation, and feature artwork as well as wedding photos from weddings that took place in the church.
Registration is required for the banquet by calling the church office at (607) 756-5689. There will then be a bicentennial service the following Sunday, April 27th, where former pastors and denominational officials will be in attendance.
