The Tioga County Legislature passed a resolution Tuesday in support of a local landowner group that is looking to frack for natural gas using gelled propane.
In July, the landowner group applied for a state permit to develop a natural gas well in the Town of Barton.
While high-volume hydraulic fracturing is banned in New York State, using propane to bust open shale formations and release natural gas is not.
The Tioga County Legislature said it strongly believes in and supports the rights of private property owners to explore and recover the mineral resources on their land.
Opponents have raised safety concerns. While the process does not involve injecting chemical-laced water into the ground. It does involve drilling with the use potentially explosive propane.
The DEC says there is no timeline for issuing a permit and the project is subject to environmental reviews.
