The Cortland County Sheriff’s Department is teaming up with the New York State Sheriff’s Association, The US Coast Guard, the NYS Office of Parks, and Recreation and Historic Preservation to help promote safe and responsible boating, including voluntary, and consistent wearing of a life jacket when on the water.

Last year there were 192 boating accidents which resulted in 118 injuries and 18 deaths in the State of New York. The US Coast Guard reports that drowning is the most common cause of death with 4 out of 5 reported deaths being a result of it.

The Sheriff’s Department wants to ensure everyone on the water has a time of happy memories with family and friends and to wear a life jacket.
