At the last Common Council meeting, Cortland Mayor Brian Tobin declared January Mentoring Month.
Mindy Gardner of Cortland’s YWCA reported to council that mentoring programs at the “Y” are busy. There’s a need. “Our program gears for ages 5 to 12 year olds that are at risk, or living in a poverty situation,” said Gardner. “We have a lot of success stories. We have a lot of kids waiting for someone like you, to come out and to help them through this time of their life.”
According to the YWCA, the mentor meets with the child once a week. Mentors provide the one-on-one attention so crucial to building self-esteem in children.
There are four mentoring programs at the Cortland YWCA.
