Third Graders at Cincinnatus, Cortland, And McGraw Schools Treated to Special Program on Dental Health & Eating Healthy
Third graders at three local schools enjoyed a special educational program, Lessons in a Lunch Box, on February 3 and 4. The presentation focused on dental health and nutrition and included take-home giveaways packaged in a specially designed lunch box.
The program was presented at Cincinnatus Elementary School, Cortland F.S. Barry Primary School, and McGraw Elementary School. It was a collaborative effort by the New York State Dental Foundation, the Children’s Oral Health Institute, the Seven Valleys Health Coalition, and JM Murray.
“The lessons these kids learned can have a real impact on their future dental health,” said Stacy McIlduff, executive director of the New York State Dental Foundation. “Lessons in a Lunch Box not only conveys essential information in a fun and creative way, but also allows children to bring the information and tools home with them.”
Lessons in a Lunch Box was created 16 years ago in Baltimore, Maryland, by the Children’s Oral Health Institute. The program teaches proper brushing techniques, dental care, and healthy eating habits. At the center of the program is a bright orange lunch box filled with dental-care tools and educational materials.
Inside the lunch box, students received a “dental care in a carrot,” which opens to reveal a toothbrush, holder, and rinse cup. The kit also included toothpaste, floss, a brushing timer, and a nutritional sticker designed for a bathroom mirror.
Students also had the opportunity to meet special mascots, including “Mighty Molar” from the Seven Valleys Health Coalition and “Chompers” from JM Murray. Dentists from the New York State Dental Association were on hand to assist with the presentations.
“As a dentist, I know how critical it is to educate elementary school-aged children on the importance of good dental care and nutrition,” said Dr. Cynthia Elberty, a NYSDA volunteer who participated at McGraw Elementary School. “Lifetime dental and nutritional habits begin at an early age, and this age group is especially good at sharing what they learn with their families.”
The program was brought to Cortland County by the New York State Dental Foundation as part of its My Healthy Smile NY pilot program. Funding was provided through a grant from the Delta Dental Community Care Foundation, whose mission is to expand access to dental care and oral health education through community outreach.
