The Weekend Arrests: Assault Charges For Friday Stabbing In Cortland

Hakeem Jones, 18, of South Avenue in Cortland, was arrested at midday Friday and charged by Cortland Police with felony Assault, Unlawful Imprisonment and Weapons Possession.

Lt. Rick Troyer tells X101 News that Jones stabbed an 18-year old woman with a box cutter, a screwdriver, struck her with a board and refused to let her leave her apartment for more than 10 hours.

She was treated for her injuries at CRMC.

Jones was sent to the Cortland County Jail, awaiting bail, and his next court date set for Wednesday.

More trouble for Hassan Reed, 32, of Syracuse.

Reed was arrested last Monday, accused of threatening a man with a gun at the Econo Lodge Motel.

Cortland Police tell X101 News that new charges were added, including unlawful possession of an ammunition feed device, because Reed’s Smith and Wesson magazine contained 9 rounds when the limit is 7.

He’s was returned to the Cortland County Jail.

A man from Cortland who ran into a utility pole at Owego and Park Street Saturday just before midnight was charged with DWI and other traffic infractions.

Curtis Grant, 22, was released and is to reappear in City Court next week.

Cortland Police were able to arrest a woman wanted by a Cortland City Court warrant on Friday night.

Lisa Walker, 24, of Cortland, was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, and Marijuana Possession.

Officers spotted her at 160 Main Street who knew there was a bench warrant for her arrest, for failure to appear in court.

Lt. Rick Troyer says when she was arrested she had marijuana and meth on her.

Walker was sent to the Cortland County Jail awaiting bail of $500 cash/1,000 bond, and is to appear in court again on Thursday.

A man who is accused by police of fighting with a woman, choking and beating her in front of a child under age 16 was arrested early Saturday morning.

Donald Whitman, 24, of Cortland faces charges of Criminal Mischief, Criminal Obstruction of Breathing, Endangering the Welfare of a Child, Resisting Arrest and Harassment, according to Cortland Police Lt. Rick Troyer.

Officers were called to 179 Homer Avenue at about 1:20 am Saturday as Whitman argued with a 34-year old woman, choked and beat her. She did not require medical attention, according to police.

Whitman is also accused of fighting with police officers when he was arrested.

Whitman was released and is due back in Cortland City Court on April 18.
