The Stray Cats’ Lee Rocker says band is “ready to go and revved up” to launch new US tour

Credit: Russ HarringtonThe Stray Cats launch their first U.S. tour in 12 years Saturday, August 3, in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The 10-date trek, which runs through an August 31-September 1 stand in San Diego, celebrates the rockabilly trio’s 40th anniversary, and is in support of their new studio album, aptly named 40.

Bassist Lee Rocker tells ABC Radio that stateside trek, which follows a run of European shows, is “gonna be great.”

“We’re ready to go and revved up,” says Rocker, who turns 58 the same day the tour starts. “And I got some beautiful new upright basses being custom painted, and [we’re] checking the gear. [We’re] super excited about it.

Rocker says The Stray Cats certainly will play plenty of their classics, but they also won’t skimp on performing material from 40, the band’s first studio effort in 26 years.

“I mean, of course we’re gonna be doing…’Rock This Town’ and ‘Stray Cat Strut’ and ‘Sexy and 17,'” he maintains, “but we want to tackle a good amount of the new record [too]…So I think we’re probably gonna do five or six songs off of it, which is exciting for us to get to play this new music.”

He adds, “I think from the reaction we’re getting…the fans out there are just really revved up over this record.”

Rocker also says he’s amazed that it’s been 40 years since the band started.

“It was 1979 in Massapequa, Long Island, in my dad’s garage. [W]e were three kids that knew each other probably since we were around 10 years old, and we started the band,” Lee reminisces. “And it’s just been, you know, especially the early days, was like being shot out of a cannon.”
