The ban of polystyrene (styrofoam) is now in effect in New York state. The movement is part of the Expanded Polystyrene Foam Container and Polystyrene Loose Fill Packaging Ban. No food service or store (wholesale or retail) will be allowed to sell or use styrofoam.
“It’s simple, New York’s statewide ban on polystyrene foam containers and packing peanuts will reduce the waste headed to landfills and combustors. The foam ban will reduce litter, clean up the recycling stream, and support the state’s ongoing transition to more sustainable containers and packaging alternatives,” said Basil Seggos, commissioner of the DEC.
