Matt Brooks: [00:00:00] Good morning. I’m Matt Brooks on X 1 0 1 Always Classic in for another edition of Happening in Homer. And with me in the studio, recreation Director for the Village of Homer, Andrew Pierce. Glad to have you back in.

Andrew Pierce: Glad to be here, Matt. Thanks for having me.

Matt Brooks: Well, it’s hard to believe it’s pretty much winter now, and those basketball courts, they’re gonna be turning into ice rinks.

Can you tell me plan dates and anything that’s relevant to the ice rink?

Andrew Pierce: With winter, rapidly approaching the DPW gave me the heads up. They will be, converting the basketball courts to the ice rink boards and ice rink liner the week of Thanksgiving.

Matt Brooks: Wow. Okay. So we’re expecting, especially if, if the weather holds up at least, probably early December is when we can start getting our skates on.

Andrew Pierce: Yeah. As always, everything’s weather dependent. We have to get some, Sub-Zero temperatures for several days. Myself will be out there with some assistance, flooding the rink. Grooming the rink, trying to get it ready. It’s on the municipal basketball courts again, so we have the ability to lock it up, keep, keep the foot track pick [00:01:00] off there to enhance the freezing conditions.

Matt Brooks: And is there anything that people should know about if they, wanna try their hand at ice skating this year?

Andrew Pierce: It’s free to the public. It’s gonna be open daily from 8:00 AM till 11:00 PM We’ll have the, the lights on in the evening, we’ll have some music playing. We ask that, you, us.

Precaution out there. If you’re a first time skater, maybe mom, dad, grandma, grandpa. Keep an eye on the little ones. But, number one is have fun out there.

Matt Brooks: It, it’s an amazing thing to have something like this in the village. Now, central New York weather, it can be, pretty varied. If there’s, if the weather’s too warm and the ice rinks not safe to, skate on, how would be the best way to keep.

An ear on the status of the ice rink.

Andrew Pierce: We update our Facebook page regularly with the ice rink information. You can always give us a call, 6 0 7 7 4 9 0 6 6 3. We’ll do our best to get the word out and, we’re not perfect at it, but we, we try to keep the ice rink open, ready and available for everyone,

Matt Brooks: and we’ll always try to, when we hear, to spread the word as well.

Now we [00:02:00] are running out a little bit outta time, Andrew, but before, we head outta the studio. Just wanted to think about, the rest of 2025. It’s fast approaching anything, you’re looking forward to as we head into the new year.

Andrew Pierce: With winter, rapidly approaching, we’ve got December 5th light of my life on the Village Green.

Also, the week before Christmas, we’ll have Santa Claus out there, touring the village. And also in January, I don’t wanna look that far ahead, but we have to January Winter Fest, the 23rd, 24th, and 25th of January.

Matt Brooks: Just because it’s cold doesn’t mean there, it’s not gonna be busy in the village.

Andrew Pierce: Exactly. Always looking for, something fun to do. Snowflakes and fun out on the village green is, something we’re looking forward to.

Matt Brooks: As always. It’s great to have you, Andrew, and, can’t wait to see the ice rink in, action. And well winter to be in full swing.

Andrew Pierce: We’re, very excited to bring it back again.

Matt Brooks: It’s been another edition of Happening in Homer here on X 1 0 1 Oh. Ways Classic. I’m Matt Brooks.
