It was a busy night on Tuesdays agenda for Cortland Common Council. One of those items is the reimagining of the annual tree lighting ceremony.
This new event would be called “Visions of Christmas” and would be held in Courthouse Park on Saturday, November 26th.
Mayor Scott Steve did give his appreciation to the Cortland Youth Bureau for helping to get things going on this ceremony.
“The Youth Bureau, Andrea has been very good about driving to get donations. We actually got a tree donated. We’re gonna put the tree up in the fountain area and decorate it there.”
In the meeting it was also revealed that a guest appearance from Santa Claus would be followed by cookies and cocoa at the Firehouse on Court Street.
The Common Council also approved the ‘Midnight on Main’ Event. The city will host this event for the New Year’s Eve celebration.
Main Street between Court Street and Tompkins Street would be closed for the event.
The city reports it will include local restaurant participation, music and entertainment, fireworks,
and a midnight ball drop.
There was some lengthy discussion between Common Council members and First Light Organizer Timothy Bennett. Cortland’s First Light didn’t happen last year or in 2020 due to Covid.
Mayor Scott Steve did express his desire for the event to happen for Cortland’s Main Street.
