In the summer of 1776, the founding fathers took an unprecedented, incredibly dangerous gamble on a radical political idea: that a nation could successfully govern itself based on the concepts of life, liberty, and the unalienable right to pursue happiness.

Powerful monarchs across the globe looked at this young upstart nation and confidently predicted it would collapse into absolute anarchy within a decade. Two and a half centuries later, that bold American experiment is still standing strong, serving as a global beacon of self-governance.

The Living Constitution

The true mechanical beauty of the American political blueprint—the United States Constitution—is that the founders possessed the profound humility to admit that they were not perfect, and that the nation would naturally evolve over time.

To ensure the country could survive systemic changes, they intentionally built in a rigorous amendment system. This allowed future generations of Americans to legally update, correct, and expand the definition of freedom, paving the way for the abolition of slavery, women’s suffrage, and expanded civil rights. It is a living, breathing document designed to help us constantly strive toward building a more perfect union.

Over the course of the last two and a half centuries, the revolutionary ideals penned in a humid Philadelphia room in 1776 have acted like an irresistible magnetic force.

They have inspired democratic revolutions across Europe, South America, and Asia, while drawing millions of brave immigrants from every single corner of the earth to our shores. Our diversity is, and always has been, our greatest national strength.

As you fire up the grill, gather with your family, and watch the brilliant fireworks light up the night sky to celebrate America’s Semiquincentennial this July, take a quiet moment to reflect on the immense journey it took to get here. From a freezing winter at Valley Forge to a fast wagon escaping a burning capital, our freedom was bought by regular citizens who refused to give up on a dream.

The next chapter of the American story isn’t up to the history books—it is being written by all of us, through our communities, every single day. Happy 250th, America.
